Obituary
Mr John Jackson
The death of Mr John Jackson occurred in Ashburton recently. He was aged 79 years. Mr Jackson was born at Port Chalmers in 1875, and came to Ashburton in May, 1899. He started a herbalist business soon after his arrival, but late became a driver for Messrs H. P. Madden and Gawler, bakers. In 1912 he was issued with the first taxi licence in Ashburton. He continued this business until May, 1940, when the taxi was sold to Mid-Canterbury Transport Ltd., for whom he worked until 1942, the year of his retirement. While conducting his own taxi business, Mr Jackson acted for years as chauffeur to Mr (later Sir) William Nosworthy.
Mr Jackson was married in February, 1904, to Miss Olive Carson.
Mr Jackson is survived by four children, Gordon, Chalmers, and Iris (Ashburton), and Kathleen (Mrs J. Ford, Whangarei). He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and three sisters, Jessie (Mrs Heycock, Auckland), Chrissie, and Annie (Mrs A. Crum), both of Ashburton.
A memorial service was held at the Salvation Army Citadel, Mr Jackson was a member of the Salvation Army in Ashburton for 53 years
