Roy - On January 18, 1913, at his residence, Wairuna, James Roy, aged 70 years - Funeral Tomorrow (Tuesday) 21st at 2 pm
The Otago Daily Times 22nd January 1913 shows
Mr James Roy, whose death occurred at his residence, Wairuna, last Saturday, in his 80th year, was a native of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where he was educated with a view to entering the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, but a breakdown in his health compelled him to give up his studies. He emigrated to New Zealand with his wife and infant daughter in the ship Grasmere (sic), the jubilee of which boat's arrival in New Zealand was celebrated in Dunedin recently. On his arrival in Dunedin he entered on an appointment as home missionary, under the Rev. Dr Burns, of First Church, Dunedin, conducting services in the Peninsula, Anderson's Bay, and Halfway Bush districts. Later on he purchased a farm in the Wairuna district, to which he removed with his family. Here he acted as the first schoolmaster at Wairuna for a period of nine years. After this he was associated with the Rev. Mr Spence, the minister of Popotunoa parish, in carrying on the mission work in the outfield, embracing Waipahi, Pukerau, and Otaraia, until these districts were raised to a sanctioned charge. For many years he acted on the commission of the peace. He was an acting elder of the Popotunoa parish, till he died, taking a keen interest in all that pertained to the welfare of the Church with which all his life he was connected. He has had a family of 13 - seven sons and six daughters, 12 of whom, with his widow, are left to mourn their loss.
