Manawatu Evening Standard 21st October 1929
The death has occurred at Wellington of Mrs Joseph Ames who was well-known for her kindliness and public spirit, and was always ready to help, both publicly and privately, when necessity arose. Her maiden name was Miss Sarah Hurford Roberts, and she arrived in New Zealand with her parents in the ship Indian Empire in 1865. She was married to Mr Joseph Ames at St. Pauls' Church, Papanui, Christchurch, in 1882, and went to Wellington, residing in Ellice Street all her married life. Mrs Ames took the greatest interest in St. Mark's Church School and in the Wellington East Girls' College, presenting handsome entrance gates to the latter and showing much generosity to the former
