Mr. Joseph Ames' new Provincial Hotel at the Upper Hutt was opened formally yesterday by a most excellent luncheon, at which a large number of our leading citizens were present. Mr. George Crawford, M.P.C., presided, and Mr. Cruikshanks acted as vice-chairman. The chairman proposed the health of the host, who acknowledged the compliment in appropriate terms. Mr. Dransfield proposed the health of Sir Julius Vogel in a speech of high encomium. When loyal, patriotic, and local toasts had been proposed and duly honored, the company separated, after a very pleasant meeting. An open supper was given in the evening to the Government laborers and working men generally, who evidently appreciated it highly. Death of Mr. Joseph Ames
Mr. Joseph Ames, who died yesterday afternoon at his residence in Ellice street, after a long illness, was a citizen who was well known and highly popular throughout New Zealand. He was born at Kaikoura in 1844, and was the third son of the late Capt. James Ames, who was whaling in Cook Strait and off Kaikoura between 1840 and 1846, when he became third pilot in Wellington, in death occurring in the latter year. Mr. Joseph Ames spent some time on the Otago and Thames goldfields. He entered the civil service in Wellington, and for some years was a clerk in the Valuation Department. Afterwards he transferred to other branches of the service. He took a keen interest in volunteering in the early and troublesome times in New Zealand, and was a member of the Mounted Rifle Rangers, a company formed in connection with the Maori war. On retiring from the Civil Service, he became proprietor of the Star Hotel, Lambton quay, which then stood on the site now occupied by the New Commercial Hotel. He was also a licensed victualler at the Upper Hutt. In his prime he took a great interest in aquatics. He was one of the founders of the Star Boating Club and a member of the "Dolly Varden" crew, which won some notable races. He also engaged in athletics, and altogether he was of a sporting disposition.
Mr. Ames was well known throughout the Dominion in connection with the totalisator. He managed this important department for the Wellington Racing Club at the old Hutt course, and for many clubs in the Wairarapa and Manawatu districts, also Blenheim and Nelson a few years back. Most of the clubs now run their own machines, but up till recently Mr. Ames continued to act for the Otaki, and Carterton Racing Club. One of the first clubs Mr. Ames was associated with was Island Bay. He acted in 1888 - the year Administrator won the Island Bay Gold Cup. During the many years Mr. Ames was connected with the totalisator business he earned a great name for his integrity and honourable dealing with his clients. He bred and raced a few horses. The best animal that carried his colours was Merrivonia (Merriwee-Livonia). She won the Manawatu Cup (two years in succession), Rangitikei Cup, Wanganui Cup, and other important races. He also bred from Livonia, Lady Kilcheran, Hellanois and Elevonia. He was a patron of J. Ayres Trentham stable.
Mr. Ames has left a widow, but no family. Mr James Ames, Wellington City Valuer, and Mr. Horace Ames, of Plimmerton are his brothers and Mrs. Buck, of Paekakariki his sister
