A Sad Case
Suicide in Brook-Street
A Young Man hangs himself
-
A sad suicide occurred in Brook street at about seven o'clock this morning. The victim was a comparatively young man, William Frederick Albert Phillips, a commercial traveller, 33 years of age, formerly in the employ of Messrs Storer, Meek and Co. Wellington. Deceased had come to Nelson for the benefit of his health, and was staying with his relations in Nile street. It appears that about for about ten months previous to the 14th December last deceased was an inmate of the Wellington Mental Hospital. He left the institution on the date mentioned, as Dr. Crosby had recommended that a change would do him good. He came to Nelson on 15th December, and since that date as stated, he had been living in Nile street East.
About 6.30 this morning, deceased went to Mr Constable's residence, in Brook street, where his mother, who was also on a visit from Wellington was staying. Mr Constable met deceased at the gate, but it locked and Mr Constable went inside his house to get the key. Meanwhile deceased jumped the gate. Mr Constable then went down the garden to an outhouse, and deceased followed. They conversed together, and after they met Mrs Constable, and a few words relative to being up so early in the morning were passed.
Mr and Mrs Constable then went inside the house, and deceased must have gone down a garden path leading to a shed, which was close under the hill. Mrs Phillips was informed of her son's arrival, and when she completed dressing, between 7.30 and 8 o'clock. she went out to look for deceased. She did not see him in the garden, and then went to the shed and saw him hanging from one of the rafters. Mrs Phillips rushed back to the house for Mr and Mrs Constable, who cut down the body. Dr. Barr was immediately sent for, but he pronounced life to be extinct. The police, who had also arrived, conveyed the body to the morgue.
A note attempting to explain the cause of the suicide, was found on a ledge in the shed, but it was incoherent. It will probably be produced at the inquest.
The deceased was well known in Nelson, He was the son of the late Mr W. Phillips, of Trafalgar street and Waimea street. He was educated in Nelson, afterwards removing to Wellington. Much sympathy will be expressed with Mrs Phillips and the bereaved relations.
An inquest will be held.
