Nelson has lost one of her most enterprising settlers in the person Mr W. Phillips, who on Saturday last, after undergoing a serious operation, succumbed to a painful disease. He was a hard working persevering colonist and had established an important industry in the shape of soap making works, the product of which was largely used in Nelson, and was well and favourably known in other parts of the colony. In fact, he was a man who was determined to do well for himself, and he succeeded, and in doing so benefited others as well as an employer of labor (sic). He was of a kindly generous disposition and no appeal was ever made to him in vain for assistance in genuine cases of distress. As a citizen, a manufacturer, and a warm hearted liberal man, he will be much missed from the small community of which he was so valuable a member, and his widow and family have the satisfaction of knowing that there is a widespread feeling of sympathy with them in their trouble
