Obituary
There passed away on November 3, after a short illness, a well known and greatly respected resident of Geraldine, in the person of Mr James Bennington, at the age of 68 years, his death taking place on his birthday. Deceased was one of a large family and was born at Lyttelton, shortly after the arrival of his parents to New Zealand from England, they having been passengers on one of the first four ships to reach New Zealand with settlers for Canterbury. Mr Bennington followed his father's trade of bootmaking, in Christchurch, Wellington, Waimate, and for thirty years in Geraldine, in which town he was a prominent figure in all activities; for about 25 years, he was a member of the Geraldine Fire Brigade, with the rank of lieutenant, and for over twenty years he was a member of he Geraldine Rifle Volunteers, with the rank of sergeant, until the disbanding of the Corps. He was also a member of the Bowling Club, and of the Masonic Lodge.
At the age of 22 years, Mr Bennington, in Christchurch married Miss Pitt, of Essex, England, who predeceased him about six years ago. There were four sons and two daughters of this marriage, one daughter, Mrs Bateman (Fairlie), and one son, Alex, who died on Gallipoli with the New Zealand troops, having predeceased him. The surviving daughter and sons are: Mrs S. Harper (Fairlie), Messrs Len and Les Bennington (Geraldine), and Spencer Bennington (Waimate).
Amongst the other organisations, deceased was a prominent member of the Geraldine District Band, acting as conductor and bandmaster for many years; he was also an ex-member of the Stanmore Band (Christchurch), the Wellington Garrison Band, the Waimate Band, and the Temuka Band.
About four years ago, Mr Bennington married Miss Sheath, of Fairlie, who survives him.
The funeral, which took place yesterday afternoon, was very largely attended by residents of the town, and from all over South Canterbury, included in the procession being members of the Geraldine Fire Brigade and Band, of the Masonic Lodge, and of the Bowling Club.
The pall bearers were Messrs G. H. Patrick, J. Moyle, J. Lorimer, G. Watt, J. M. Sutherland and H. Broad.
Archdeacon Purchas conducted the services at the house and at the graveside. Captain Brett read the Fire Brigade burial service. A large number of motor cars joined the cortege, and many beautiful wreaths were received.
