The Timaru Herald 24th November 1993 shows
Mr Charles (Chub) Pye
Obituary
Charles John Leighton Pye, a well-known and respected Temuka community leader, died last week at Timaru Hospital. He was 86.
Known by most people as Chub, Mr Pye had a huge profile in Temuka, serving the community for nine years as mayor of Temuka, as a Justice of the Peace, and as the prime mover behind the establishment of the Wallingford Retirement Home.
Mr Pye was born in Geraldine and completed his schooling at Milford and Temuka.
He was a keen cyclist. At 16 years of age he rode in the Timaru to Christchurch road race finishing in fourth place, posting the fastest time for a competitor under the age of 18.
After working as a farm labourer on his parents' farm, Mr Pye branched out into a heading and agricultural contracting business. He brought his first header in 1934.
In 1936 he married his wife, Frances, and the couple purchased their first farm three years later.
In addition to farming, Mr Pye built flats in Christchurch and in 1962 built a home in Wood Street, Temuka, where he and Frances lived until his death.
Many people in Temuka would be grateful for Mr Pye's legacy including the 40-bed retirement home and the many overseas trips he chaperoned as tour guide.
Mr Pye's daughter Noeline said her father cherished the following favourite saying "I shall pass this way but once, therefore any good that I can do or any kindness that I can show let me do it now for I shall not pass this way again."
She described her father as "an upstanding gentlemen with integrity and natural leadership ability" and "a man who was always willing to give sound advice at all times."
My (sic) Pye is survived by his wife Frances and his four children.
