Arthur's first job was at "Glenmark" Station, from there he went to the racing stables (with his 2 brothers) of Mr W C Webb at Riccarton, Christchurch. A year or so after he and Emily were married (married 1878) they moved to the Temuka and Orari district where most of their family were born, Abdy Farm, Orari. He followed farming over the years and at one time was a good Shearer. In 1900 he purchased the Crown Stables in High St from his brother Charles and ran them as a Coaching and Carring business, also for the hire of horses and gigs. He sold this business about 1910. At one time they lived in Birkett Street. About 1913 - 14 they moved to Palmerston North and Arthur worked at the Defence Stores during the war. In 1919 he died and was buried at Terrace End cemetery, Palmerston North, Block 8 Plot 29. Notes from V Baker's Family Tree

Obituary
News was received in Temuka yesterday of the death in Palmerston North on Monday last, of an old Canterbury Settler, Mr Arthur Story, after a long illness. The late Mr Story was born in Yorkshire, England in 1857, and when seven years of age came to New Zealand with his father and brothers (Charles and William), in the sailing ship Canterbury, arriving at Lyttelton in the first week of 1864. He went to work at an early age, he first billet being on Glenmark Station. He next entered the training stables of Mr W C Webb, at Riccarton, and after a time there took to farm work. Coming to Temuka about 30 years ago, he continued to follow agricultural work, and was at that time a very fast shearer. In 1900 he brought the Crown Stables from his brother Charles, and after carrying them on for a few years sold out to Mr T Gunnion. A little later he Mr W Hopkinson built the A1 stables, and the late Mr Story conducted them for a several years. He then sold out once more, and with his wife and family left for the North Island. For about three years he worked in the Defence Stores at Palmerston North, but about twelve months ago his health - which had been wonderful good - began to fail, and on Monday last he passed away. Until his health broke down he was a very strong man, and was, like most of the old settlers, able to turn his hand to almost any kind of work. Many in this district will regret to learn of his death. He leave a widow and a family of twelve - four sons and eight daughters. Three of his sons went to the front, two have returned and one is still in Egypt. Three of his daughters are unmarried, the others being Mrs D Grant, Mrs H Pye, and Mrs Wooding (Temuka), and Mrs Peter Stewart and Mrs Grant (North Island).
