Car Strikes Pedestrians
One Woman Killed, Three Injured
One woman was killed and three others were slightly injured when a motor car, driven by Robert Ashwell Lewis, an accountant and land agent, residing at 10, Lloyd street, got out of control at the intersection of Manners, Willis, and Boulcott streets shortly before 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Two of the woman were knocked down as the car went over the pedestrian crossing into Boulcott street, and the other two, one whom was the deceased, were caught by the car as it jumped the footpath by Brownson's jewellery shop.
The victims of the accident are:-
Killed - Miss Theresa Greener, aged 42, of 16, Campbell street, Wanganui.
Injured - Nurse Rachel Knowles, Wakefield street, Johnsonville, severe bruises and shock; Miss N. Shelton, 285, The Parade, Island Bay, severe bruises and shock; Mrs. James Walsh (sister of the deceased), 19?, Somerset avenue, minor injures.
In a statement to the police Mr. Lewis said that he was driving along Willis street, intending to proceed up Boulcott street. On receiving the signal from the constable on point duty, he turned to go up the rise in Boulcott street, and sounded his horn to warn passing pedestrians. Just prior to reaching the footpath crossing, he knocked down two women. This unnerved him, and his car got out of control. He endeavoured to stop, but knew little until the accident had happened.
Miss Greener was dragged underneath the car, and it was found necessary to life it bodily to free her. The victims were then taken to Perrett's Pharmacy, where medical attention was given to the injured. Mrs. Walsh identified the deceased as her sister, who was on a visit from Wanganui. Miss Shelton was conveyed to her home and Miss Knowles to the Public Hospital. Both women are reported to be progressing favourably to day. Mrs Walsh later returned to her home.
