Mr James Taylor
Death at After-Church Meeting.
The Roslyn Presbyterian Church was the scene of a tragic occurrence last evening when Mr James Taylor, an elder of the church, died suddenly while speaking to a gathering of young people. An after-church rally of young members and the choir was being held to meet the office-bearers, and Mr Taylor had been chosen to give an address. After he had spoken about 20 words he suddenly collapsed. Dr Perry was summoned, but on his arrival, he could only pronounce life to be extinct. It is understood that Mr Taylor suffered from heart trouble.
Mr Taylor came to New Zealand over 60 years ago, settling in the Popotunoa district, where he engaged in farming pursuits. He later owned the Ashley Downs estate at Waiwera. He was one of the earliest settlers in this district. About seven years ago he came to Dunedin, settling in Roslyn. He was a member of the Otago Early Settlers' Association, and took an active interest in agricultural and pastoral matters. Mr Taylor was deeply attached to the church, and was one of the best known elders in Dunedin. He is survived by his widow and a large family.
