Individual Note: Edward Freethy Gichard was a farmer and when he was 17 he went to Pongaroa where he drew a section of land by ballet draw and he had to work 2 days a week on the roads. The sections of land were called village homesteads. His section was 20 block 1X Mount Cerberus Survey District at a cost of 2 pounds, 2 shillings and 6 pence for half a years rent. He built a house on the land which he leased till he got married and he also bought another section called Range Farm. Ill health forced him to live with his daughter Rellas but his wife continued to live in Pongaroa with their son Noel until he married. Details from J Whitford

ALLEGED CATTLE - STEALING.
A plea of Not Guilty was entered by Andrew Petersen to indictments charging him with having, at Pongaroa, stolen two bulls belonging to Robert Yeoman, one heifer, the property of Freethy Gichard, and one bull and two heifers, owned by Roland Reid. Alternative counts charged him with, receiving the cattle knowing them to have been stolen.
Mr. Wilford appeared for the accused. Mr. G. J. Petherick was chosen foreman of the jury.
Mr. Gully in opening the case for the Crown said Petersen was a settler at Pongaroa, and the others were his neighbours. The main evidence was that accused either drove the cattle on to his own place, or found them there, and altered their earmarks and brands. About the same time Petersen's small herd increased from 25 to something over 30 in a somewhat mysterious manner. The fences between the neighbours were secure, yet when accused was branding and ear-marking his own cattle, the others from his neighbours' places, underwent the same process. Petersen knew the marks used on his neighbours' cattle, and could have ascertained their ownership. Another point that would be brought out was that different statements, of an entirely contradictory character, had been made by accused as to how the cattle happened to be in his possession.
Mr. Wilford's cross-examination of the witnesses went to show that by means of a stream flowing through the several properties cattle would be able at times to go from one section to another; also, that up to August last the cattle could have similarly passed either way, owing to damaged fencing. There was also a great deal of evidence concerning branding and re-branding.
