The Pan System
A meeting of ratepayers and householders in the Geraldine Town District was held in the Town Board offices on Wednesday evening last, when there was a large attendance, many of those present having to stand in the doorway or on the street.
...... continued
Mr J. D. Gore (convener of the meeting at the request of a number of ratepayers) dwelt on the hardship the pan system was to the working men at his end of the town. At the lower end of the town there was scarily one who did not have a quarter or half an acre of land attached to his house, and with them the pan system was quite unnecessary. It came very hard on them to be forced to pay 10 shillings a year each toward the pan system for the upper end of the town, where it might be needed. He would move the following resolution :- "That this meeting strongly objects to the compulsory services of the scavenger, and that his services are not required by the majority of the householders." Mr John Hay seconded the resolution. The chairman called for amendment, but none being forthcoming he asked if anyone wished to speak to the resolution.
...... continued
A stranger, who was allowed to speak, said that at St. Albans, where he lived, if a man had land enough to dispose of the nightsoil without it been a nuisance, he made application to the board, and was exempted from paying the usual fee. Mr John Pye thought it rather hard on a lot of men out of work at the present time to pay for the scavenger when they could do the work themselves. He was not speaking for himself, but he saw the hardship on others

Obituary
John Pye
On Thursday evening at his residence, North Terrace, Geraldine, there passed away after a short illness one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Geraldine, in the person of Mr John Pye. The late Mr Pye came to this district 45 years ago from Devonshire, and for many years was gardener to the late Mr Tripp, and later on he took up a farm in the Ashburton district. His venture, owing to dry seasons, did not prove successful so he returned to Geraldine, and devoted his energies to market gardening - first on the Downs on the site now owned by Colonel Moore, and later on the section now occupied by Mr Coombs. On his health breaking down he purchased a property on North Terrace, on which he resided up to the time of his death. He was one of the founders of the Oddfellows' Lodge at Geraldine, being initiated in 1875, and took an active interest in the order. His eldest son, the late James Pye was chairman of the Town Board for many years, and on his death a memorial fountain was erected to his memory by the citizens in the Geraldine Domain. He leaves a widow and five children to mourn his loss. His sons are Mr C. Pye, Wellington, Mr J. Pye, Palmerston North, and Mr W. Pye, Raincliff, his daughters being Mrs Wildermoth, Christchurch, and Mrs J. Bagrie, of Geraldine. The late Mr Pye was a member of the Methodist Church and took a great pride in keeping the garden plots at the church in order
