George Matthew Snelson
1837 - 1901
George Snelson was born at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, England. He trained in the ironmongery business, and then emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 24. After ten years working for E. W. Mills & Co., in Wellington, he moved to Palmerston North, where he spent the rest of his life.
He became an auctioneer and commission agent and can rightly be called "The Father of Palmerston North". He was the first store keeper, the first chairman of the Manawatu Road Board, the first chairman of the School Committee, the first chairman of the Hospital Board and the first Captain of the Rifle Volunteers. He was also the first Post-master, but is best remembered as becoming the first Mayor of the Borough in 1877.
