Accidents and Fatalities
An inquest touching the death of Charles Cochrane, who died at his house, Roslyn, on Thursday morning, was held yesterday before Mr Coroner Carew and a jury of six, of whom Mr James Jackson was chosen foreman. Elizabeth Cochrane, wife of deceased, stated that the latter was born at Leith, in Scotland, and had been 18 years in New Zealand. He was a tailor by trade and was 58 years of age. He had pretty good health, but for the past 10 or 12 days he complained of a pain in the inner part of the chest. There seemed no difference in him when he got up on Thursday morning. He had his breakfast, and left as usual about 7 o'clock to go to his work. About half-past 8 witness got a message that the deceased was unwell. Witness went to meet him, and he said he thought he could return home all right. On the way, however, he got worse, and had to rest a couple of times. He got to the garden, and just inside he fell down and expired. Dr Colquhoun being telephoned for arrived about 9 o'clock and, examining the body, pronounced life to be extinct. Dr Colquhoun gave evidence that he thought the cause of death was heart failure. Annie Iles also gave evidence. A verdict in accordance with the medical testimony was returned.
