An eight-roomed house, occupied by Mr. James Kearney and family, situated opposite the Upper Hutt School, was burnt to the ground shortly after 7 o'clock last night. The fire originated from a chimney in one of the bedrooms. The family were at tea in a back room, and were aware of nothing unusual till a passer-by ran in. The house was insured for 200 pounds in the London and Lancashire office, and the furniture for 200 pounds in the North British and Mercantile. About 12 pounds worth of furniture was saved.
