Interment at Hamilton East, Thursday. Friends please accept this intimation.

Mr. Mathew Walsh
The death of Mr. Mathew Walsh, a member of an old Waikato family, occurred at his home, 31, Williamson Avenue, Grey Lynn, yesterday. He was 73 years of age. As a youth Mr. Walsh worked in the collieries about Cardiff. In 1874 his father was attracted by the prospects in New Zealand, and the family in which there were nine children, took up land between Hamilton and Ngaruawahia. After being employed in Lamb's flourmills at Ngaruawahia, Mr. Mathew Walsh worked as an engineer on the steamers of the Waikato Steam Navigation Company, which at that time provided the only transport beyond Mercer. When the railways displaced the steamers Mr. Walsh became a contractor, being one of the sub-contractors on the Hamilton railway bridge. Mr. Walsh subsequently carried out a number of contracts for the Auckland City Council. The flax industry next claimed Mr. Walsh's attention, and he operated a mill at Mercer with his brother and brother-in-law. During this period he served on the Mercer Road Board. After the slump in the flax industry from 1890 to 1892 Mr. Walsh and his brother James commenced a river steamer service on the Waikato and Waipa Rivers. The partnership was later dissolved, and the steamer service and a flax-milling business were carried on by Mr. Walsh until his retirement 20 years ago. Since then he had lived in Auckland. In 1886 Mr. Walsh married Miss Ellen Curran in Auckland. He leaves seven children, Mr. J. Walsh, Wellington; Mr. M. Walsh, Sydney; Mr. E. Walsh, Wellington; Mr. T. Walsh, Devonport; Mrs. J. O'Brien, Mrs. S. Murphy and Mrs. M. Deasley, of Auckland. One son, Lieutenant M. Walsh, was killed in France.
