Young Motor-Cyclist Killed in Collision with Car on Highway
Severe head injuries from which he died soon after received by a young motor-cyclist when the machine he was riding was involved in a collision with a car on the Main Highway at Marybank late on Saturday afternoon. He was William Seconi, butcher, aged 19, a son of Mr. H. G. Seconi market gardener, Marybank.
The accident occurred at about 5.15 p.m. on a bend on the Marybank Hill. The motor-car was travelling in the direction of Wanganui and the motor-cyclist was travelling in the opposite direction.
After the impact, the car, driven by Mr. A. R. Bremner, Taihape, finished up near a ditch on the left-hand side of the road. The motor-cycle was thrown to the other side of the road.
Seconi was thrown clear of his machine, but received multiple head injuries. He was taken to the Wanganui Hospital by ambulance, but was found to be dead on arrival.
Mr. Bremner received facial injuries, severe abrasions to both hands and shock. He was taken to hospital by ambulance.
An inquest concerning the death of Seconi was opened on Saturday night by the district coroner, Mr. S. M. Dixon and after evidence of identification had been taken was adjourned sine die.

Inquest into Death of Motor-Cyclist
A verdict of accidental death was returned by the coroner, Mr S. M. Dixon, when an inquest was held yesterday concerning the death of a young motor-cyclist, William Seconi, aged 19, who was killed at the foot of the Marybank Hill late on the afternoon of Saturday, December 10, when he was involved in a collision with a car.
Sergeant L. Nicol conducted the inquiry for the police, Mr J. S D. Tizard appeared for Seconi's relatives, and the driver of the car was represented by Mr C. N Armstrong.
The first witness called, Lawrence Peter Hodge, farmer, Whangaehu Valley Road, said that he was travelling along the main highway in a southerly direction at about 5 p.m. Near the Putiki Pa a motor-cycle passed him at a speed of 45 miles an hour.
When he arrived at the first bend at the foot of the Marybank Hill, witness added, he found that a collision had occurred between the motor-cycle and a car. The motor-cyclist had apparently been killed instantly.
Walter Ronald Barnes, Marybank, aged 11, a pupil of the Marist Brothers' School, Wanganui, said that he was near the cowshed of his home when he heard the sound of a motor-cycle approaching from the direction of Wanganui. He saw the machine turn on the first bend and swerve to its incorrect side of the road at a fast speed.
Subsequently, said witness, he saw the motor-cycle collide with the front right hand side mudguard of the car. The motor-cycle travelled along the running board and then skidded in the road, with the driver underneath.
Witness added that he believed the motor-cycle was travelling too fast to pass the car on its correct side.
The driver of the car, Alexander Ross Bremner, farm labourer, Mataroa, said that at the time of the accident he was travelling alone from Turakina to Wanganui. He was passing through Marybank on an S bend at a speed of 30 miles an hour and on his correct side of the white line when he saw a motor-cycle 50 yards ahead on its incorrect side of the road. It appeared to be travelling at a reasonable speed (30 to 35 m.p.h) for a motor-cycle.
Witness added that he stepped lightly on his brakes and the motor-cycle started swerving back to its correct side. When a collision appeared possible, however, witness swerved well over to his left and applied the brakes.
Constable J. F. McGlynn, who visited the scene of the accident before the vehicles were moved, said he fixed the point of impact at 3ft. 10in. over the centre line on the motor-cyclist's incorrect side of the road.
The coroner returned a verdict that death was due to multiple injuries received when the motor-cycle Seconi was riding became involved in a collision with a car.
